Literacy test questions help?

My daughter (13yo) has to take a literacy test for her social studies class, and since most of the questions are foriegn material to the students, their teacher instruced them to finish the test with all resourses, including the internet, so she asked me to post them on here. There were 50 questions, and these are the ones she can’t figure out.

1. Congress passes laws regulating cases which are included in those over which the United States Supreme Court has ______________ jurisdiction.

2. True or False: The Legislatures of the states decide how presidential electors may be chosen.

3. If it were proposed to join Alabama and Mississippi to form one state, what groups would have to vote approval in order for this to be done?

6. The only laws which can be passed to apply to an area in a federal arsenal are those passed by ___________ provided consent for the purchase of the land is given by the _____________.

7. If the election of the President becomes the duty of the United States House of Representatives and it fails to act, who become President and when?

8. How many votes must a person receive in order to become President of the election is decided by the United States House of Representatives?

2) True. Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution states: "Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress"

3) A referendum voted on by the citizens of both states (2/3 approval necessary). A legislative action approved by the Legislatures of both States. And a legislative approval by the National House and Senate, with final approval by the US President.

different for colored children?
different than it is like today?

You’re speaking of the school system in the South during the Great Depression. Naturally it wasn’t as good as it could have been because of the lack of money all around. And black children were usually taught separately from white children, if taught at all.

Alabama is receiving a $1.7 million bonus from the federal government for having one of the best-run food stamp programs in the country, which should benefit Madison County

It’s part of $18 million in bonuses the USDA is giving states for efficient administration of the federal program.

Springfield, Ill. – Illinois has gotten a $3.4 million bonus for running one of the nation’s most efficient food stamp programs.

“This is the fourth year in a row that we have received a high performance bonus,” said Gov. Dave Heineman during a news conference Friday. He praised “all the Health and Humans Services employees for a job well done. Their services are deeply appreciated.”

Is Alabama the new Lemon Grove?

Back in 1930 – the all-white school board of Lemon Grove, California decided they didn’t want children of Mexican descent sitting next to their white children in class. So – the school board built a separate school – and then turned away the Mexican-American students from their original school and directed them to their new school – which was basically a big barn-house. Within the local community – it became known as la caballeriza – or “the stable.” But rather than just accepting the new segregated school – the parents protested. They sought help from the Mexican consul in San Diego – eventually got legal representation – and won a court case against the Lemon Grove school board – putting an end to the barnyard education plans. This happened more than 80 years ago – but today – history is repeating itself. Thanks to the radical anti-immigration law recently passed in Alabama – Hispanic children are afraid to go to school. That’s because the law requires Alabama school officials to check the immigration status of children in public schools. 99% of children in Alabama’s K through 12 public education system are American citizens.

But those who don’t look like citizens – mainly because their skin isn’t as white – are subject to prying questions and unnecessary paperwork to prove their citizenship. And while most were born here and are citizens, in some cases their parents are not, and they’re terrified their parents will be identified and deported and they’ll end up orphans and wards of the state – a wrenching tearing apart of families that’s happened already to more than 5,000 children in America just in the past year – and will likely happen to another 10,000 in the next five years. This creates a hostile educational environment that’s leading to record numbers of Hispanic students going absent from school. Since the law went into effect – Hispanic student absentee rates have tripled – while other students’ absentee rates have remained flat. Also since the law was passed – the drop-out rate among Hispanic students has exploded.
